StarPrint supports user to print directly to printer via USB. Printing directly via USB relates to some particular hardware and OS requirements. Please follow below procedure:

  1. Make sure your device support for USB Host Mode (read below)
  2. Get your USB OTG cable ready. You can't just use normal USB cable to print via USB. If you do not have it, you can easily get it from store. Do not use long USB cable which may cause unstable connection. Normally do not use over 2 meters cable.
  3. Plug your USB printer into the USB port on the cable, then plug the cable into your Android device micro USB port.

How to determine if device support for USB Host?
When an mobile device acts as a USB host, you can use other USB devices such as USB printer, USB storage attached to it. However, there is not all device has USB Host Mode support. How can you determine if your device has USB Host Mode supported?

  •  USB Host Mode drivers loaded on your device
  •  A version of the Android OS loaded on that device that supports USB Host Mode
  •  An Android device (eg phone or tablet) that has built-in hardware support for USB Host Mode

Android OS
USB Host Mode support was introduced in Android version 3.1 (Honeycomb), so if you have Android 3.1, or newer you should have the necessary support for it in your OS, Android 4 also adds additional USB and OTG support. Also, many third-party ROMs add support for USB Host Mode to phones that have the hardware support.

Test your device
There are some apps that can help you test whether you have all of the necessary hardware and software to do this, such as USB Host Diagnostics. Using it to test your device's capabilities is very simple:

  • Install an USB host diagnostics app from the Google Play store. You can install any app by searching "USB Host" and select the best one (there are 2 app recommended by StarPrint users: USB Host DiagnosticsUSB Host Test).
  • Run the app.
  • Tap the Start Diagnostics link (or similar function), and following the directions first ensure that you have nothing plugged into USB on your device and then plug a device (such as a USB flash drive) in when prompted.

You can read the full article about OTG and USB Host mode at stackexchange article

HTC devices owners can check HTC blog to know whether their devices support USB Host Mode.

Print to shared printer

With old model printers not owning neither Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and Android device does not support USB host, there is another solution: print to shared printer. This method allows users to print to a shared printer connecting to a PC.

Printing to a shared printer requires the followings:

  • The printer is connected to a PC throught USB port, and the printer is shared over the network. Printer can be shared over LPD, SMB, or IPP. If you are not fimiliar with thoese terms, check with your network administrator.
  • The PC and Android device must be connected on the same network.

Follow steps to print to shared printer:

  1. Launch StarPrint
  2. Select the content you want to print (Contact  for example)
  3. Tap [Select Printer] -> Shared Printer
  4. Input information of shared printers. If you are not sure, please contact with your network administrator. Finally tap on OK to confirm shared printer.
  5. Now, select the shared printer you have just added. Then Tap on Print to print the content.
  6. On History screen, you can monitor the status of every print. After print job completed, tap the the rating icon to evaluate print result. This step is optional but it will help us to improve the print quality and you will be able to update your StarPrint for free.

How to print if StarPrint has no driver for printer (for MAC OS X, Linux)

Even if StarPrint supports more than 3000 printer models, there are still many unsupported printers out there. Printing industry is multiple-standards with many manufacturers, and even a manufacturer applies different printing technology for different printer model. So it is impossible for an all-in-one app. That's why sometime StarPrint displays a tiny exclamation next to the printer, to mark a "non-supported" printer. In that case if you do not want to buy another printer (of course not), StarPrint still has a solution for you.

This guideline will show you how to print from StarPrint to a printer which is not supported directly by StarPrint. All you need is a CUPS server which mostly pre-installed on every Linux or Max OS X PC. Let check this model:

If you still need to install CUPS, just download it from, and follow guideline to install on CUPS page, or get support form Linux download page.

After having CUPS installed, follow below steps:

1. Install printer to your PC (with CUPS installed) and make sure the PC can print well to printer via CUPS.
    - Install under Linux

    - Install under Max OS X

2. Share your printer via CUPS
    - Share printer on Linux
    - Share printer on MAC OS X

3. Connect Android device (with StarPrint installed) to CUPS PC using Wi-Fi

4. Open StarPrint, select content, then goto Select Printer screen

5. Add shared printer to StarPrint: tap on Shared Printer and input below information:
- Type: <IPP or LPD depending on how your shared it via CUPS>
- Host: <PC's IP address>
- Shared name: <name of the share you configured on CUPS>
- Drivers: Generic PostScript Printer (under Common group), or Print raw (only available on Plus version)

6. Now, select the shared printer you have just added. Then Tap on Print to print the content.

Simple steps to print with StarPrint

1. Launch StarPrint

2. Select the content you want to print (Contact for example)

3. Tap [Select Printer] -> Search -> Turn on Wifi/Bluetooth/USB printers options -> Search

4. Tap on the Printer you want to print to.

5. Tap on Print to print the content.

6. On History screen, you can monitor the status of every print. After print job completed, tap the the rating icon to evaluate print result. This step is optional but it will help us to improve the print quality and you will be able to update your StarPrint for free.

How to set print options

StarPrints comes with print settings which help you refine the print output as you want. This article describes what they are and how to select them.

Simply start StarPrint and select the content, you will then be taken to Print Preview screen where lists the content you want to print, printer name, previw of print, and available print settings you can set. The preview of print is only available when both Content and Printer fields are specified. If you do not see the preview, it means you missed either. The preview may be displayed in one or multiple pages depending on the print size and paper size you select. You may tap on a page preview to have a closer check.

- On first print, you need to tap on [Select printer] to open the printer list and select one.

- You always can tap on printer name or content name to re-select them if neccesary.

Below is list print options abd explanation. Depend on print content, certain print option may or may not display.
