  1. Make sure your device support for USB Host Mode (read below)
  2. Get your USB OTG cable ready. You can't just use normal USB cable to print via USB. If you do not have it, you can easily get it from store. Do not use long USB cable which may cause unstable connection. Normally do not use over 2 meters cable.
  3. Plug your USB printer into the USB port on the cable, then plug the cable into your Android device micro USB port.
  4. After connect Android device to printer by USB cable, please follow simple steps to print with StarPrint to print. You need some special notes below:
  •  In the "Search Printer” screen, make sure the "USB printers" option is ON.
  •  During searching, you may see the message "Allow the app APF core to access the USB device?". Please select “OK” button to continue, otherwise, StarPrint cannot detect and print to USB printers. Check “Use by default for this device” if you do not want dialog to display again.

How to determine if device support for USB Host?
When an mobile device acts as a USB host, you can use other USB devices such as USB printer, USB storage attached to it. However, there is not all device has USB Host Mode support. How can you determine if your device has USB Host Mode supported?

  •  USB Host Mode drivers loaded on your device
  •  A version of the Android OS loaded on that device that supports USB Host Mode
  •  An Android device (eg phone or tablet) that has built-in hardware support for USB Host Mode

Android OS
USB Host Mode support was introduced in Android version 3.1 (Honeycomb), so if you have Android 3.1, or newer you should have the necessary support for it in your OS, Android 4 also adds additional USB and OTG support. Also, many third-party ROMs add support for USB Host Mode to phones that have the hardware support.

Test your device
There are some apps that can help you test whether you have all of the necessary hardware and software to do this, such as USB Host Diagnostics. Using it to test your device's capabilities is very simple:

  • Install an USB host diagnostics app from the Google Play store. You can install any app by searching "USB Host" and select the best one (there are 2 app recommended by StarPrint users: USB Host DiagnosticsUSB Host Test).
  • Run the app.
  • Tap the Start Diagnostics link (or similar function), and following the directions first ensure that you have nothing plugged into USB on your device and then plug a device (such as a USB flash drive) in when prompted.

You can read the full article about OTG and USB Host mode at stackexchange article

HTC devices owners can check HTC blog to know whether their devices support USB Host Mode.

Printing to a shared printer requires the followings:

  • The printer is connected to a PC throught USB port, and the printer is shared over the network. Printer can be shared over LPD, SMB, or IPP. If you are not fimiliar with thoese terms, check with your network administrator.
  • The PC and Android device must be connected on the same network.

Follow steps to print to shared printer:

  1. Launch StarPrint
  2. Select the content you want to print (Contact  for example)

How to print if StarPrint has no driver for printer (for MAC OS X, Linux)

Even if StarPrint supports more than 3000 printer models, there are still many unsupported printers out there. Printing industry is multiple-standards with many manufacturers, and even a manufacturer applies different printing technology for different printer model. So it is impossible for an all-in-one app. That's why sometime StarPrint displays a tiny exclamation next to the printer, to mark a "non-supported" printer. In that case if you do not want to buy another printer (of course not), StarPrint still has a solution for you.

This guideline will show you how to print from StarPrint to a printer which is not supported directly by StarPrint. All you need is a CUPS server which mostly pre-installed on every Linux or Max OS X PC. Let check this model:

If you still need to install CUPS, just download it from http://www.cups.org/, and follow guideline to install on CUPS page, or get support form Linux download page.
